How to unlock your “Hidden Musical Talent” and play heartfelt, emotional music in 2025… Even if you’ve never touched an instrument in your life!

“I could never play the flute!”

That’s what I said when the old man shoved the beat-up wooden flute into my hands one Saturday morning in the tiny mountain town of Telluride, Colorado.

When he heard this, he gave me an odd smile, as if he knew some great secret and wasn’t telling.

I wouldn’t be too sure of that, my boy” And just like that, he was gone…

Maybe you’ve thought something like, “I could never play the flute!”

If you’re anything like me, I always thought learning to play an instrument was something you had to do as a kid to be any good at.

I liked listening to music but the thought of playing an instrument like the flute hadn’t really crossed my mind.

So when I met with the old man that day to pick up the flute, all I planned use it for was decoration in my home office.

Little did I know the path it would actually lead me down. The same path that brought me here to share this story with you today.

This is the story of how I unlocked my own "hidden musical talents”, and how you can do the same, even if you've never played music in your life.

Delivering gifts in the Kandahar Province

Hello, my name is Eric Raum and I’m the creator of the Copper Flute. Prior to playing the flute, I spent years working for a non profit in Iraq and Afghanistan before studying Physiology and Biochemistry through Harvard Medical School’s HMX program. My work has been featured on NBC, CBS, the Hollywood Reporter and more…

On top of the tallest man-made structure in Afghanistan

I’ve always been fascinated by how vibrations and frequencies effect the human brain and body, so I went back to school to understand this on a deeper level.

My research has focused on this topic ever since.

Presenting research around light / brain entrainment

My work has been featured on ABC News, The Hollywood Reporter, The Atlantic and more.

Today I’m going to share a fascinating story around how I used a little-known “musical secret” to unlock talents I didn’t know I had, and the best part is, I’ll share how you can do the same thing right at home.

Learning this little “musical secret” has led to:

  • Decreased stress levels

  • Better control over my emotions

  • A calmer sense of well being

  • Feeling more connected to a deeper purpose

  • Being more present with my family

Spending quality time with my wife, Eliza, and two children

No matter what your experience with music has been so far or how impossible playing music may seem right now… If you follow the advice I’m going to share, these benefits may be in your future as well.

When I used to think about “playing an instrument”, the first thing to came to mind was “playing songs”. You read sheet music and play what someone else wrote.

There’s nothing wrong with that in the same way there’s nothing wrong with following along with a recipe to make a cake…

But I’ve found the real magic comes from playing what's on your heart in the moment. NOT repeating what someone else wrote down in the past.

Unfortunately, in the Western musical tradition, there’s a heavy emphasis on “following along with a recipe” to make music instead of using the instrument as a tool of self-expression.

But in other cultures, people are given a few key pointers on how to use their instrument…

Then they’re set free to experiment and express the many feelings and emotions that are impossible to express any other way but through your own musical ideas.

The benefits I’ve experienced from music have come through this second approach.

Where a flute isn’t meant to be kept in the band room. Instead, a flute is an interface to the soul.

It’s a way to translate your emotions and memories and feelings into real-life frequencies and vibrations. No sheet music required.

Once I experienced the power of this approach myself…

I set out on a mission to help more people experience it for themselves.

Like this, but with the Copper Flute

Today I’m going to show you this other side of music. The one they don’t teach in school.

And I’m going to introduce you to the raw, primal, spiritual power of transforming the breath that gives you life into mystical, magical, and beautiful musical frequencies.

You will discover the lost art of speaking in a musical language that comes from a place deep within you, not from notes on a page.

I’m about to share how easy that can be with the Copper Flute.

Just like it was for Alissa…

But none of this would have happened if I hadn’t picked up that flute from the old man in Colorado.

Even though I had set the flute on a shelf and almost forgot about it completely…

A few weeks later as I was packing for a canoe trip, I tossed it in my bag before heading out the door.

After portaging canoes all day out in the wilderness, I found myself around a fire as the sun was setting, flute in hand.

Even though I didn’t “play the flute” or know how to read music, and even though some might say I had no business trying to play an instrument without “proper” training…

Artistic rendition of me wondering which end to blow into on this old flute

I blew into the end that looked like you should blow into it, and a squeaky but passable note came out the other side.

Even that first note, awkward as it may have been, felt “right”. Like I was more connected to the wilderness around me.

But what happened next is why I’m sharing this story with you today…

Because as my first shaky note rang out over the water, someone answered back.

It wasn’t a human voice calling out from the darkness, but a wild loon.

As I looked over the lake, this beautiful bird was gently floating in the still water as the last sliver of sun lit up the horizon with an orange glow. It was like a painting.

As I played another awkward note, the loon called back.

Again and again, I’d fumble a note, some short, some long, all simple and easyand the loon would answer. I kept playing this duet for hours, in complete awe of this act of co-creation with nature.

A phone picture I took that night that doesn't do the beauty of this moment justice.

It felt like I was speaking in a language that went beyond my own human understanding.

And tapping into that power didn’t require any music theory, sheet music, or months of practice…

That night, playing a simple song with my Loon companion, I had my first encounter with the mystical, powerful, and profound power of the flute.

After this trip, I dove head first into learning all I could about this special instrument. I researched all angles: scientific, musical, even spiritual.

I left no stone unturned, going back to the earliest sources I could find across many different cultures and traditions.

What I found, again and again, was the honored place flutes have held across different people groups throughout time.

Not just for their musical sound, but for their supposed spiritual connection.

For example, the Sufi philosopher Hazrat Inayat Khan taught that playing the flute with your breath is an extension of the divine breath that gives life to all creation.

And when you play, whether it’s a simple note or a beautiful melody, you can feel that power flowing through you.

That’s because the flute is actually very unique in how it creates sound.

On a guitar, for example, a string is plucked, making the string vibrate. The vibration of that string is creating the sound you hear.

But when you blow into a flute, it vibrates the column of air inside the flute, and that vibrating air is what actually makes the sound.

That means the same breath that gives you life is the actual instrument you are playing!

Cut-away view of the magic that happens inside a flute.

No wonder the flute has been considered such a special form of emotional and spiritual connection by people throughout history.

As I studied flutes from around the world, I was introduced to a new way of approaching music.

I had to let go of any preconceived notions I had around what it meant to “play music” and instead…

I learned how to unlock the musical ability that was already inside of me. What do I mean by that?

Think back to when you were a kid. Remember playing games like dodgeball? Where you had to dodge and move in unpredictable ways?

Or even games like “Simon Says” where you had to think up new ideas as you went?

These childhood games show how you already have the ability to make unique, creative choices quickly built right inside of you. So how do you take those skills and apply them to playing music?

It’s actually pretty easy and straightforward. And it’s what helped me shortcut my own learning…

Learning music is much easier than this picture makes it seem

Unlock your own musical ability using what I call the “One-Two-Three Method”.

When most people try to learn music, they’re trying to learn how to read music… AND learn where to put their fingers… AND learn how to make a good sound… AND learn, well, everything all at once.

It takes a long time because when you’re trying to cram too much information in at once, everything gets backed up.

But with my “One Two Three Method”, I teach your body first, then your mind, and finally, you introduce your own personal spark through the spirit of your playing.

Body, mind and spirit. Each is introduced one at a time, unlocking your own unique ability to play music, even if you have never played a note in your life.

As I used this One-Two-Three Method myself to quickly learn how to play new kinds of flutes, I was continuing my research about how different frequencies impact the brain.

Through my studies I came across the importance of something called “overtones”.

The beauty and power of Overtones

Overtones make an instrument, voice, or sound "sound" the way it does.

What are overtones and why do they matter to your musical journey?

If you play a note on a piano, and play the same note on a trombone, it sounds different, even though it’s the same note.

The reason is, in addition to the main note, or “frequency” being played, each instrument is also playing many other quieter frequencies as well. These other frequencies are what make an instrument sound one way or another…

These are what are known as “overtones”. Research shows that our perception of musical timbre, which affects our emotional and physical responses to music, is mostly determined by these overtone patterns.

One pattern may have a positive impact while another overtone pattern may actually have a negative effect.

Dissonant overtones

As you begin to unlock your own hidden musical abilities, you don’t want to be doing it with the wrong overtone pattern.

With flutes, the overtone pattern comes down to incredibly precise dimensions and angles right where the air is split into two. A change of a fraction of a millimeter in this area can drastically change the overtone pattern.

This is why different styles of flutes seem to have different effects for both the player and listener.

Unfortunately, I found that the flutes with the overtone patterns I connected with the most were the hardest to play.

They required weeks of practice holding your mouth and lips in just the right position before you could get any sound out of these flutes at all.

And while I was stubborn enough to go through all that hard work… I knew the immense learning curve was keeping these special overtone patterns out of reach for most people.

Harmonious overtones

How can you unlock your own musical abilities and play a flute that has the overtone patterns you want?

After studying all of the design elements that went into crafting these overtones, I set out to create a flute of my own.

One that captured the overtone pattern I was after, yet was easy for anyone to play.

But what happened next changed what I was creating completely, and it’s why I’m writing to you today….

That afternoon while meditating, I had what I had an astounding vision.

This was not something I’d experienced before. Most of my time meditating is spent corralling my mind back into silence.

But that morning, in my minds eye, I could see myself standing in a market somewhere in the Middle East. In the air, I heard the sweet sound of flute music, and followed it.

As I walked past beautiful woven rugs and baskets full of colorful spices, I came into a clearing to find an old man seated on a cushion playing a flute.

But that morning, in my minds eye, I could see myself standing in a market somewhere in the Middle East. In the air, I heard the sweet sound of flute music, and followed it.

As I walked past beautiful woven rugs and baskets full of colorful spices, I came into a clearing to find a man seated on a cushion playing a flute.

When he saw me, he stopped playing and asked what kind of flute I wanted to hear…

“I have the Bansuri from India, the Xiao from China, the Shakuhachi from Japan, and the Copper Flute from America.

When I heard that last one, I was stunned.

I had just begun working with copper. I was fascinated by its status as the oldest metal worked by human hands, and felt drawn to use it to make music.

A beautiful Copper Flute, very close to the dream version

As I looked down at the old man’s Copper Flute, it sparkled with beautiful shades of green and blue. But right as I was about to ask him to play, my eyes opened and I was back in my chair at home.

What was this experience? I can only guess. But it felt like a deep calling to bring something new into the world. It felt like a confirmation that I was on the right path, and most importantly…

It felt like this Copper Flute could bring people the same things I’ve experienced.

  • Deeper sense of purpose

  • Better sleep, because I’m not up worried at night

  • More energy during the day, because I was start my day with a flute meditation and positive intentions

  • New friends from around the world bonding over a love of this special instrument

  • Better understanding of myself and my place in the world

So after thinking about the meaning of this vision, I headed to my workshop and got to work.

Special materials developed for acoustic properties

I combined the ancient use of copper for the body, with a precision engineered acoustic polymer for the head, allowing me to carve out the exact overtone pattern I was after.

200 prototypes later, I finally had the first official Copper Flute… almost.

After spending so much time crafting the sound, a different kind of artistry began.

Every custom Copper Flute starts as a blank copper canvas before undergoing a special set of processes I’ve adapted from… the Alchemists.

Yes, the “turn rocks into gold” pre-scientists from back in the day. It turns out, they worked on a number of other discoveries…

And with what seems like alchemist magic, copper is transformed into unique patterns of turquoise, blues, and more.

Every custom Copper Flute is a work of art, worthy of its place in your home, even if you never picked it up and played it at all.

But the real power begins when you DO pick it up and play.

The Copper Flute is designed to be easy to play for a complete beginner, while offering nuance and control required by professionals.

One of the innovations around the Copper Flute is the optional Air Adaptor. This moves the playing position of your Copper Flute from horizontal to vertical, improving your reach and comfort.

And the simple finger hole approach means no complicated key systems for you to learn or maintain.

Millions of people worldwide enjoying Copper Flute music

When I first shared videos playing this new kind of flute online, the response was encouraging. As one video crossed the one million view mark, people from around the world were asking how to get a Copper Flute of their own.

They were drawn to the beautiful sound of this flute, and, without knowing it, to the specific overtone pattern only the Copper Flute has.

But there was a problem. The Copper Flute isn’t a mass-produced product. It’s not a “product” at all.

I’m an artist, and every Copper Flute I make by hand is my artwork. Creating each Copper Flute is a multi-day process that spans multiple disciplines and techniques. But the outcome is something new, beautiful, and one-of-a-kind.

Was there a way to make a lot of Copper Flutes to supply the demand without sacrificing the artistry?

No, because my goal wasn’t to make as many as possible, it was to make unique works of art that captured a specific overtone pattern, and allowed any player to create emotional, heartfelt music.

So I continued to craft each Copper Flute by hand, putting my own personal touch on each unique work of art.

And I only make and release a few flutes at a time, which sell out quickly to people all around the world.

It wasn't long before the Copper Flute had reached the ends of the earth, reaching all Continents except Antartica. It felt like I was beginning to see my vision become a reality…

But that’s when I realized, something was wrong.

While I was happy to see these Copper Flutes head out to new homes… And even though some people were already using their Copper Flutes to make beautiful music…

I felt like something was missing. Because many of the people drawn to the Copper Flute’s unique sound were admittedly first-time musicians. They were like I was back in the wilderness, not knowing much past “blow into the thing”.

Maybe my calling wasn’t simply to build you a flute, but rather to help “build” or awaken the musical skills inside of you right now as well.

So I set out to share my “One Two Three Method” with every new Copper Flute owner.
